The Jegdalek, Afghanistan mines have been worked for more than 700 years. They're some of the oldest in the world and fine mineral specimens, such as these rubies in marble matrix, are occasionally sourced there. This specimen features an abundance of large, richly colored and beautifully crystallized rubies accompanied by lustrous pyrite which – much like the lustrous red of the rubies – contrasts brilliantly against the stark white marble. This rarity of a specimen carries the history of the world and mineralogy in its beauty. The cube in the picture is approximately one centimeter.
